WHO Director-General due to visit on Feb 10

MUSCAT: Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO (World Health Organization) will be visiting Oman on February 10 to attend the launching of the National Policy and Multisectorial Plan on Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). Dr Ghebreyesus will be accompanied by Dr Jaouad Mahjour, Acting Regional Director, Dr Svetlana Akselrod, WHO Assistant Director-General for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health and Ambassador Michèle Boccoz, WHO Assistant Director-General for External Relations during the 2-day visit.


Noncommunicable diseases, including cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes, chronic pulmonary diseases and cancer, among others, are the major cause of premature deaths worldwide, both developed and developing countries. “Oman is taking its commitment towards implementing the UN declaration on prevention and control of NCDs and NCDs have been included as a top priority area in Health Vision 2050, the long-term health strategy for Oman in the next few decades,” Dr Akjemal Magtymova, WHO Representative to Oman said.
