MUSCAT, Aug 19 - Haj pilgrims from the Sultanate — currently in Mina in Saudi Arabia — are moving towards Mount Arafat and the Plains of Arafat, where they will observe the ‘Day of Arafah’, an important day for the holy rituals, on Monday. At Mount Arafat, pilgrims will cast stones at a pillar that represents the devil as part of the pilgrimage. Traditionally, 49 stones have to be cast followed by special supplication and prayers. According to Islamic belief, this ritual reminds of the Day of Resurrection when crowds of people stand, waiting for the judgement.

Additionally, Muslims fast on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. It is an integral part of Haj pilgrimage, the fifth pillar of Islam. Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave his last sermon standing on Mount Arafat. For this reason, it is visited by pilgrims during the Haj. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that fasting on the Day of Arafah forgives all the minor sins of the past year and the coming year.
