MUSCAT: The 18th Arab Consumer Union (ACU) forum will begin today under the auspices of Dr Fuad bin Jaafar al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. Representatives of government and private institutions and the Omani Woman Associations will take part in the three-day forum, which is organised by the Oman Association for Consumer Protection (OACP), in collaboration with the Arab Consumer Union (ACU). The forum aims to promote cooperation among the consumer protection associations in the Arab countries and the exchange of experience among them. A parallel conference will be held on the sidelines of the forum to address the role of the NGOs in the rationalisation of the use of new products and means of globalization.

The conference will focus on enhancing community awareness on the necessary measures to protect consumers from hazards that threaten their health and safety and protect their economic interests in light of the rapid developments in various fields of life. It will also address the liberalisation of international trade and open markets, which led to the diversity of products in exchange for a lack of information and a lack of consumer awareness.
