Awards to honour companies for providing outstanding services as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) were presented at a function here on Monday morning. Instituted by Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), the three main awards were won by Oman Air, Oman LNG and Salalah Methanol Company. Dr Yahya bin Mahfoud al Mantheri, Chairman of the State Council, presided over the ceremony. Many other Omani companies along with the Zain Group of Kuwait were also felicitated at the ceremony attended by officials from both government and private sector at Hotel Sheraton.

Speaking on the occasion, Saeed al Kiyumi, OCCI Chairman, said that such awards will help express appreciation for companies. “This will also help encourage others to take up philanthropic ventures,” he said. According to him, the awards have been given to local and international institutions and companies affiliated to the chamber in various economic sectors. Quoting World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Al Kiyumi said corporate social responsibility is “the continued commitment of businesses to act ethically, to contribute to economic development and to improve the quality of living conditions of the workforce and their families, the community and society at large.”

The mechanisms of work in this important and vital sector have also developed in the quest to develop a healthy, positive and interactive relationship between economic and productive institutions and the surrounding society, he said. Al Kiyumi urged all companies to participate in the upcoming editions of the award and to do more in the area of community responsibility. The chamber seeks to extract the award from its local framework to the Gulf and Arab countries to encourage community initiatives.

“The chamber is a witness to this development, and within the framework of its responsibility and objectives adopted by the Board of Directors at the current session 2014-2018, which was keen to work directly and closely with the institutions and companies in the private sector in order to continue the effort exerted in this regard,” he said. Ahmad bin Sultan al Busaidi, Executive Director of the Amman Center for Governance and Sustainability, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Award, said, “Social Responsibility is an institutional of thought and culture that is integrated into operational strategies.”
