NIZWA, FEB 13 - Tour of Oman 2018 was off to a colourful start after the first stage began from Nizwa Souq at 11:30 am. Shaikh Khalifa bin Saleh bin Salim al Busaidy, Deputy Governor of Nizwa in Al Jabal Al Akhdar, flagged off the event. The ninth edition of the Tour of Oman gets underway from February 13th to 18th and the race is expected to get tougher and more attractive. Competitors took off for a 162.5 km ride all the way to Sultan Qaboos University. The tour includes six stages where the riders will take the race to a total distance of 914.5 km. The first stage of the tour was from the Nizwa Souq in Al Dakhiliyah governorate to a distance of 167.5 km and on the itinerary towards Nizwa Gate in Farq — then to Hay Al Turath — Nizwa Sports Complex roundabout — then to Birkat Al Mouz roundabout then to Izki. After that the riders turn right from the Oman Sultan’s artillery battalion in Izki and then cross the highway to reach Saima — then Wadi Mahram and access to the highway to the University Bridge and then Six area roundabout and the book roundabout and enter the campus of Sultan Qaboos where they arrive at 3:30 pm. The Deputy Governor of Nizwa said Tour of Oman is the most prominent sporting event this year.

“The Tour of Oman is the most important sporting event this year, which comes as part of the events of Muscat Festival. It is an opportunity to introduce the tourist areas in the Sultanate through the participation of many teams from the world. This event will help the tourists know Oman’s history, culture and civilisation in various governorates and wilayats. The Sultanate’s wadis, aflaj, castles and forts and traditional markets all will be showcased during the event. I would like to thank the organisers, especially Muscat Municipality, Royal Oman Police and all the supporting bodies for the success of this wonderful event.” The second stage will be hosted by the SQU in Al Seeb and will be the route for aggressive punchers to pull their way through 167.5 km at 11 am.
