By Kaushalendra Singh — SALALAH: April 11 - Dhofar Lens, an exhibition of photographs derived from different college students in Salalah, was true a depiction of Dhofari life, its beauty and culture. The exhibition opened on Tuesday, was part of a competition hosted by Salalah College of Applied Sciences. A total of 93 photographs, including those which were declared first, second and third, were put on display in the college’s Salalah hall.

The students of Salalah College of Technology (SCT) stole the show with first prize and maintaining tie with CAS, Salalah for second and third prizes.

The winners were Abdullah Naji Ahmed Fadhil (first); second were Mohammed Hamed al Sheikh (CAS) and Sultan Ahmed Mohammed al Khatiri (SCT); and third position was held by Amira

Suhail Ahmed Musallam Bait Said (CAS) and Ghida Ahmed al Shanfari (SCT).

Guest of honour Dr Mohammed Saeed al Shasai, Acting DG of Information in the Governorate of Dhofar, expressed happiness over the event and level of photography talent among the college students. “I am really glad to see the technical skills the students are having in photography. They have nicely depicted Dhofar, its natural beauty and culture and I am thankful for all those who were behind the event.”

Dr Ahmed Balkhair, College Dean, exhorted the students to come out with many more good works like this and do not hesitate in asking for support from the college. “Such events inculcate a sense of confidence among the students and give them platform to showcase their skills. It is a kind of training for them to take part in bigger events in future,” he said.

Dr Amal al Shahri, Assistant Dean Student Affairs, called it an opportunity to attend an event in which her college students came out with flying colours. “I am glad to see my students getting first, second and third positions. This is an endorsement of our hard work with our students and our efforts to ensure their overall growth.”

More than that, Al Shahri liked the idea of students’ participation in inter-college event. “I liked the channel of engagement among the colleges. This is how we exchange ideas, which ultimately benefits our students. We look forward to more such engagements and events in future.”

Muneera Tabook, Corporate Communication Coordinator at Raysut Cement, said she was awestruck to see the works of the students and felt honoured to support the event as a community development partner. “We as responsible community partners would like to do much more to strengthen the skills of our young generation. Our support is always there for them,” she said.

Dr Vandana Jyotirmayee, Head of the Department Mass Communication in CAS, Salalah, said it was successful collaboration with the local colleges. “More than that, it was nice to know that there are students who are not studying photography but are playing well with the camera.”

“Among 107 entries we selected 93 pictures for the competition and the exhibition. It was very tough task for the jury to adjudge first second and third. They were decided strictly on the basis of technical aspects. We look forward to more such engagements with local educational institutions to hone the hidden skills of the students and college’s engagement with the community,” she said.
