More than 5,000 civilians have been killed in Yemen since March 2015, including 1,184 children, the UN human rights office said on Tuesday, renewing its calls for an international probe into the conflict.

The rights office has been mandated to track civilian casualties in Yemen since the start of the Saudi-led offensive in support of the government against an alliance of rebels and ex-president Yemeni Ali Abdullah Saleh.

“Between March 2015 and 30 August, at least 5,144 civilians have been documented as killed and more than 8,749 injured. Children accounted for 1,184 of those who were killed,” the rights office said in a statement.

“Coalition airstrikes continued to be the leading cause of child casualties as well as overall civilian casualties,” the statement added.
