Child-friendly edu model mooted

MUSCAT: A Consultant’s Tentative Programme of the second mission of Mainstreaming Child Friendly Schools (CFS) in Oman will continue until the end of this week. As part of the programme, a consultation and validation workshop was held on Monday. The workshop was organised in coordination with the National CFS team members and other department heads from the Ministry of Education and other ministries.


The workshop presenter, Dr Cream Wright, an educational expert from Unicef, stated in the executive summary and overview report: “Oman has achieved phenomenal progress in education in the past 40 years. Its facilities are good, it provides reasonably good education services, and its investment in the school system is exemplary.”


Thus, the report made “a bold recommendation for the Sultanate of Oman to exploit the full potential of child-friendly models by adopting the Child-Friendly Education (CFE) model as a thematic organiser to guide policy, programming and investments for the education system.”


The report also “highlights a strategy for shifting to a child-friendly education system without causing undue disruption to the existing system. The strategy requires schools and their communities to select one or more priority CFS/E principle annually, on which they will focus to mainstream CFE”.


Furthermore, in the report, Dr Wright said: “In terms of CFE principles, after careful consideration of the Omani context, the report proposes four core principles: 1) The principle of child-centredness, which is a catch-all assertion. 2) The principle of democratic participation which asserts that children and their parents, as well as local communities and other stakeholders should be involved in the work of the school and have their say. 3) The principle of inclusiveness which reasserts that education is a right for all children regardless of any factor or background circumstances. 4) The principle of protection which stresses that all children have a right to learn in a safe environment.”
