Check tyre pressure before going on long drive: ROP

MUSCAT, July 3 -

As part of a campaign launched by the Directorate-General of Traffic at Royal Oman Police (ROP), motorists have been urged to check their vehicles regularly to ensure the safety of their families and others.

Before driving long distances, especially those heading to Salalah’s khareef season these days, ROP has advised motorists to check the tyre pressure of their vehicles.

“Having the right tyre pressure is crucial for driving safety. Incorrect pressure can affect car’s handling, braking, fuel economy, comfort while riding and the life of tyres. It is important that every car owner frequently checks his/her tyres — about once a month — because low tyre pressure has some effect on the vehicle that can be both dangerous and costly,” says ROP.

With low tyre pressure, there is a risk of both oversteering especially around the curves. Tyres with low pressure take longer to stop, especially on wet pavement. While vehicles with low tyre pressure skid more on wet pavements, they also skid further.

In worst cases, low tyre pressure can lead to a complete failure of tyres. Too much contact with the surface of the road increases friction, and this heat can cause tread separation, blown tyres, and likely, a bad accident as a result.
