MUSCAT, JAN 6 -

Around 200 contestants from 23 countries are expected to partciapate in the 2017 edition of Capoeira Championship to be held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.

Capoeira is a blend of martial arts, dance, self-defence, acrobatics, music. The game is popular with women, men and children as an exciting and fulfilling way to stay fit.

It is one of the most complete workouts and fitness programmes that develops strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, rhythm, agility, reflexes, endurance... and so much more. Capoeira develops mind, body, spirit and gets more enjoyable the longer one practices.

The event involving the Brazilian martial art form will be held in co-operation with the Brazilian Capoeira Association.

Mahmoud bin Khamis al Araimi, head of the Organising Committee, Saud bin Badr Ambusaidy, Director of Sports Activities in the Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman’s coach for Brazilian Capoeira attended the press conference.

“Apart from around 40 youngsters from Oman, players, coaches and experts from countries including Brazil, Europe, Asia and the Gulf states are expected to participate in the event”, said Mahmoud.

Rooted in the rich cultures brought to Brazil by Africans, Capoeira’s history, is a subject of much debate.

Capoeira has undergone considerable development and evolution in its training, organisation and practice. Today, there are two equally important styles of Capoeira: Angola and Regional. The majority of Capoeira schools today practice both, recognising the importance of each and understanding that Angola and Regional possess a symbiotic relationship.

The gracefully strategic physical dialogue happens in the Roda, the circle where training manifests into games between two Capoeiristas (practitioners of the art). These games are an intricate exchange of circular and straight kicks, escapes, sweeps, takedowns, and gymnastic flourishes.

Capoeira brings health and balance to the life of its participants, whatever their age. The martial art is ideal for building awareness of body and mind, teaching fast reflexes and self-defence tactics. Capoeira is graceful and challenging, a life-tool encouraging all those who train to grow and invest in physical as well as mental well-being.
