Bolivia’s President Evo Morales takes part in an Aymara ritual to acknowledge Pachamama (Mother Earth) before the departure of the reed mace-handmade 18-meter long raft Viracocha III, in La Paz on December 15, 2016.

The vessel will join the Viracocha III expedition which will depart from Arica, north Chile, next January 2017 and travel 10.000 nautical miles to Sidney, Australia where it is due to arrive in about six months.

US biologist Phil Buck -the man behind the project- aims to demonstrate the ancestral migration between the two continents and reevaluate the indigenous culture that inhabited the villages surrounding the Titicaca Lake -which Bolivia and Peru share- at 3,800 meters above sea level. — AFP
