MUSCAT, JAN 19 - Every year, the Sultanate attracts a large number of tourists from European countries during this season. Reason: migratory birds. Bird-watching is a hobby for many of these tourists.
“A variety of species of birds visit the Sultanate after flying long distances,” said an Omani environmentalist and bird-watcher.
Pleasant climatic conditions during the season attracts a lot of birds to the Sultanate, according to him.
This also happens to be the breeding/ hatching season for birds as the weather is cooler and trees provide them with shade, adequate food and water.
“The ideal time for watching birds is between sunrise and up to 8.30 am, and 3:30 pm to 5 pm.”
Birds that can be sighted this season include: Indian Roller, Green Bee-eater, Yellow Vented Bulbul, Graceful Prinia, Purple Sunbird, Night & GreyHeron, Black-winged Stilt, Spotted Crake and Greater Flamingo.
On the other side, birds have been facing threat of urbanisation. “There are many species of birds whose population is on the decline. The authorities should conduct studies that might help provide proper solutions to avoid such problems in the future,” said the environmentalist.
