Dec. 30: The Musandam Peninsula, which is located on the northern border of the Sultanate of Oman, is rich in unique historical and heritage sites. Its high mountains, which rise more than 2,000 metres above sea level, holds many natural treasures.

Bait al Qufl, which literally means “House of the lock”, ranks as one of the most attractive spot in the peninsula. Omanis used to hide and preserve their goods such as food and other materials in very small houses built by stone and clay. Bayt Al Qufl has a sunken floor with around two metres storage space used to store grains and dates and some kind of fishes.

When locals used to move to the sea side during the summer, they had a special key to lock these houses in order to secure them during their absence. These kinds of houses were constructed in plains and mountains. They can be seen in many areas like Asee, Khawr Najd and very close to Al Khalidiyah Park.

To reach these kind of Omani structures one need to join any mountain safari which is organised by the locals in the region. This would also lead visitors to explore other natural wonders. Jabal Al Harim (Mountain of the Women) which ranks the highest point at 1,800 metres also provides great chance to see many types of fossils and samples of rocky arts dating back to 250 million years when the mountain range of Musandam were under the sea level.
