ASU’s new campus opens

IBRA, Dec 18 - The sprawling new campus of A’Sharqiya University (ASU) was opened by His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tareq al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture, on Monday. “The new campus will cater to 1,500 students in different programmes every year. In five years, we will be able to accommodate 7,000 students, meeting the increasing demands of the local as well as international job market,” Dr Aboud bin Hamad al Suwafi, President of the committee, told the Observer.


The new campus has been built on an area of 40,000 square metres at a cost of RO 25 million. It consists of six buildings that house the College of Engineering, College of Business Administration, College of Applied Sciences-Administration building, student services centre and learning resources centre, in addition to the services building. These buildings are equipped with the latest labs and equipment.


The opening ceremony was also attended by a number of excellencies, directors of military and civilian government institutions, shaikhs and other local administrative officials of Al Sharqiyah North and South governorates, businessmen and founders of the university, ASU’s chairman and members of both board of trustees and board of directors, and academic and administrative bodies. The university is being run in collaboration with Texas Tech University and Oklahoma State University. Established in 2009 by a Ministerial Decision (78/2009) issued by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), ASU is located in Ibra, North Al Sharqiyah, some 150 km from capital Muscat.
