MUSCAT: The Muscat Century Ride is all set to deliver an unforgettable experience and the ultimate road race cycling challenge for amateur riders. Friday’s event will see 125 racing cyclists gather before sunrise to take on a picturesque but demanding 100-mile (164-km) course around Muscat and the surrounding area. The route will take seasoned and new riders alike through Yiti, Bandar Khiran, Muttrah Corniche, Muscat and Seeb on the way to the finish in Al Khuwair. Along the way they will face demanding hill climbs, notably a severe 800 climb up Hamrya Hill as well as two large hills on Al Jissah towards Qantab.

The Muscat Century Ride is part of the Tanfeedh programme and organised by the Oman Cycling Association with logistical and operational management support by Oman Sail. The Muscat Century Ride will start at 0515, with the course initially taking the riders towards Yiti in the east, with the first challenging hill climb coming at the 10-mile mark with Hamrya Hill. Almost all of the route is on open public roads and riders have been warned they could face traffic around the Muttrah and Seeb fish markets.

“Road race cycling is an increasingly popular activity and we are delighted to be involved with the Muscat Century Ride,” said Salma al Hashmiyah, Chief Marketing Officer at Oman Sail, “Oman and the Muscat area offer a fantastic road cycling environment, while the route will provide a challenge to all those taking part,” she added. Registration for the Muscat Century Ride takes place on Thursday evening at the Park Inn. Following the 0515 start riders are expected to return to the finish area in the Ministry of Tourism car park between 0945 and 1330.
