Muscat, Sept 15 - The electric cars market in Oman is expected to get a boost with the unveiling of more public charging stations, according to industry sources. “A few hybrid brands have already hit the roads and are doing well. Buyers are just waiting for reliable infrastructure across strategic locations in various cities,” said a senior executive with an auto dealership. Omanoil unveiled its first charging station for Electric Vehicles (EV) in the Sultanate on Friday. “The facility will be offered at the company’s Mazoon Service Station in the capital,” said the company.

In an earlier interview to the Observer, David Kalife, CEO of Oman Oil Marketing Company, had said the company was prepared to face the future customer needs coming from alternative energy. “We are considering electric chargers for cars as well as others fuels like CNG or H2. As experts in fuel and lubricants, we are offering solutions to various customers in all industries. We study and project markets trends based on customer needs.” “I have just bought a hybrid car of a luxury brand after a test-drive.

It has been a costly affair, but I feel the time has come to move away from fossil fuels,” said Sijoy, a resident of Muscat. He added, “Drivers are concerned about charging options and durability of electric vehicles in Oman, whose topography  includes mountainous terrains.” The first electric car charging station in Muscat was unveiled at InterContinental Muscat in January this year, along with stations in Suhar and few other places. The global sales of plug-in electric cars have increased. In June, 157,933 vehicles were sold, which is 58 per cent more than a year ago. With 758,375 sales year-to-date (up to 69 per cent), the plug-in market now accounts for 1.6 per cent of the total volume, say reports.
