NEW YORK: Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdallah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, met with Marija Pejeinoviae Buriae, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia, on the sidelines of the meetings of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting discussed bilateral relations between the two countries in the fields of common concern.
He also met with Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan. The meeting stressed on the deep bilateral, political and economic relations binding the Sultanate and Pakistan and the importance of enhancing them, besides exchanging viewpoints on important developments in the region.
Qureshi said in statement after the meeting: “Our relationship with the Sultanate of Oman is historic and we have a joint cultural links.”
He also said that the meeting with Bin Alawi discussed the joint cooperation on several important issues, mainly the situation in Afghanistan and peace in the region, besides new opportunities for investment, expressing hope that Gwadar City will become a vital place in the near future because of investments, the port and corridor linking China to Pakistan, which will make it an economic centre close to the Sultanate, “thus benefiting the whole region.”
The Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs also held a meeting with Nikos Christodoulides, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, during which they reviewed relations of joint cooperation between the two friendly countries and discussed means of strengthening them, especially in the economic aspects.
In a statement after the meeting, The Cypriot Foreign Minister said: “I will visit the Sultanate in February to discuss a number of issues of common interest. Cyprus is a member of the European Union (EU) and we hope that our country and the Sultanate will play a role in improving and developing relations between the EU and the Middle East. The Arab Gulf is our neighbour and we want to bring it closer to Europe”.
Bin Alawi also held a session of bilateral talks with Mohammad Jawad Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran.
These talks came within the framework of the political developments and crises in the region and ways of joint action to find peaceful solutions to solve them.
The Iranian Foreign Minister praised the wisdom of His Majesty the Sultan and the positive role of the Sultanate’s government as a key mediator in solving global disputes.
He added: “We have a very excellent relationship with the Sultanate of Oman and we believe that this relationship is in the interest of the two countries and regional security in general.”
The Iranian Foreign Minister also said: “The Sultanate played an important role in the development of the nuclear agreement signed by the major countries and Iran and we believe in this agreement and we work with the European and regional countries to preserve it. We count on Oman as a neighbour and a distinguished partner.” — ONA
