Al Suwaiq open with Al Shabab clash

MUSCAT, August 15 - Only 24 hours left for kick-off in the domestic football season in the Sultanate as 14 clubs are competing for the shield of Omantel League. This edition of league features the following clubs: Al Suwaiq, champions of last edition, Al Shabab, the runners-up, HM Cup champions Al Nasr, Al Nahda, Al Oruba, Muscat, Dhofar, Sohar, Saham, Mirbat, Oman Club and the new arrivals to the league: Al Rustaq, Majees and Sur.


Defending champions Al Suwaiq will commence their campaign by facing off Al Shabab in the opening round matches at Sohar Sports Complex on Friday. The match kicks off at 9:05 pm. Salalah giants Dhofar will take on Saham at the same venue at 6:05 pm. Oman Club will host Al Oruba at Seeb Stadium at 5:55 pm, while Mirbat will face off Muscat at Salalah Sports Complex. The first round matches are to be completed on Saturday by having three matches. Sur will commence their matches in the league with a tough game against Al Nahda at Sur Sports Complex, while Al Rustaq will clash with Al Nasr at Seeb Stadium. Majees will play against neighbours Sohar at Sohar Sports Complex.

As many as five national coaches will be available with their clubs including: Obaid Khamis as Majees coach, Salim Sultan head coach of Saham, Ali al Khanbashi, coach of Al Suwaiq, Khalid al Alawi as Al Shabab coach and Ibrahim Sumar as Muscat coach. The League professional department at Oman Football Association (OFA) has kept all arrangements ready for the start of the new season despite some suggestions to delay the start of the league. All the match commissioners and referees are also finalised for the first round.
