MUSCAT: Oman’s Al Suwaiq and Al Ahli of Jordan shared the points at Muscat’s Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex after a 0-0 draw in the AFC Cup Group A match late on Monday. Liberian forward Marcus Maculey had the bulk of the chances in the first half for visitors Al Ahli, while opposite number Abdulrahman al Ghassani was also denied at the other end by the Jordanian side’s keeper Mohammad Khater. There were few chances after the half-time break until 13 minutes from the end when Al Ahli captain Yazan Dahshan hit the post after Yazan Thaji’s pass found the midfielder lurking inside the penalty area. The result leaves the pair on two points each, three points adrift of second placed Al Zawraa of Iraq who defeated Syrian pacesetters Al Jaish 3-1 in Group A’s other tie.

AL WEHDAT EDGE SAHAM

In Amman, Mohammad Mustafa scored the decisive goal as Jordan’s Al Wehdat opened up a three-point lead at the top of Group C of the 2017 AFC Cup following a 2-1 victory over Oman’s Saham at King Abdullah II International Stadium on Monday. Saham took a surprise lead on 14 minutes when Mohammed al Ghassani got on the end of Mohsin Jouhar’s beautifully weighted ball to volley home on the bounce from 15 yards. Ahmed Wridat headed in from six yards to level on 27 minutes before a wonderful towering header from Mustafa following Ahmad Hisham’s corner from the left four minutes after the restart put Al Wehdat in front. The hosts’ Monther Abu Amara missed from the spot midway through the half but Al Wehdat held out to move three points clear of Al Muhharaq at the top of the standings after the Bahraini side defeated Lebanon’s Nejmeh 2-1 in Monday’s other Group A fixture.
