MUSCAT: Al Sharqiyah University’s E-purity project has won the best environmental project award at the recently held national DOM Innovative Environmental Entrepreneurship Competition organised by Youth Vision in partnership with BP Oman. The competition is aimed at encouraging the youth to come up with innovative solutions for various environmental problems. The E-purity project designed and developed by a seven-member team from the University’s Students Affairs Department comprised of students Abdulmalek al Haimali, Walid al Monzeri, Balqees al Shaeebi, Arwa al Breeky and Siham al Maslahi, and supervisors Marwah al Toubi and Ahmed al Assli.

The E-purity project is an innovative method to produce 100 per cent natural and environment-friendly washing powder.

According to the winning team, E-purity offers alternatives to chemical products that cause harm to the environment, and thus contributes to efforts at finding sustainable solutions to diverse problems afflicting the environment.

The E-purity project beat tough competition from 46 teams in the first stage and 14 teams in the second stage.

In the final stage E-purity was declared the best sustainable project from among the six projects from various institutions shortlisted for the round, where each project was subject to strict evaluation at multiple stages including presentations and discussions about its business viability and benefits.

The DOM competition aims to raise environmental awareness in Oman and instil a socio-environmental culture by encouraging young people to create innovative ideas and sustainable projects to tackle local environmental issues.
