Muscat, May 19 - Al Nakr village is a good destination for those who are looking for a cooler weather. It lies in a huge canyon called Al Nakr. One has to cross the canyon and experience the thrill of off-road driving to reach this village, which is one of the abandoned farm villages located in the impressive range of Jabal al Hajar (The Rock Mountain in Wilayat Al Hamra). Currently, this village is harvesting fresh dates and apricots. The harvest season is locally called “Al Qaidh”. Harvesting these fruits requires a great deal of effort like collecting agricultural produce and taking them to the local markets. “Each Friday, I take my produce to Nizwa Souq and sell them at a reasonable rate through an auction process,” says a farmer.

This village, built with stones and mud on the mountain heights, tells the story of life of Omanis who depend on agriculture and livestock. People still use the same rocky homes built by their families for more than 300 years. They also utilise the traditional irrigation system which has been used by Omanis for more than 2,000 years ago. This tranquil village has become a fascination for visitors. “We usually see many tourists, especially during the weekends, therefore we ask the authorities to provide basic services needed for tourists,” say villagers.
