By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT: May 27 - An agent selling expired products to restaurants in return for free meals has been arrested by officers from the Public Authority for Consumer Protection in Buraimi. Based on a tip-off, the authorities found the distributor was supplying dairy products to a restaurant. A team of officers formed to inspect the restaurant found milk that was past its expiry date in the refrigerator. The milk truck was seized as workers were loading cartons of dairy products. Confessing to the crime, the workers said it was done in exchange for free meals from restaurants. A restaurant used to mix milk products with pepper, mint and salt, and offer it to customers. A ‘stop order’ was issued against the workers and the matter referred for legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, a court sentenced migrant workers to imprisonment for six months and ordered their expulsion from the country for slaughtering and distributing rotten cattle meat in Salalah. They were also fined RO 1,000. They were arrested on information that an expatriate brought sick cattle from unknown sources, slaughtered them and sold them. After obtaining a search warrant from the prosecution and in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police and the Dhofar Municipality, the commission formed a team that monitored the farm for a week. The slaughterhouse at the farm was said to be unclean. The first defendant said the seized meat was fit for consumption, but it was learnt he had slaughtered the cattle three months before with help from three others.
