Abdulaziz brace powers Al Suwaiq

MUSCAT, Oct 23 - Oman national team striker Abdulaziz al Muqbali kept his club Al Suwaiq on top of the Omantel League 2017 with a timely brace against Muscat in the eighth round of matches late on Sunday.


At the Suhar Sports Complex, league leaders Al Suwaiq bounced back from their 2-1 loss against Al Nahda in the last round with a solid display and array of attacks against a well-fought Muscat.


Star striker Al Muqbali made the intentions clear with a sixth minute goal for Al Suwaiq. Muscat regrouped after the early goal and their build-ups resulted in a well-deserved equaliser in the 34th minute, thanks to Mahmood al Mukhaini.


Man of the match Abdulaziz sealed the match for Al Suwaiq in the 78th minute to make it 2-1.


At Seeb Sports Stadium, Al Shabab kept their second spot in tact with a 2-0 win over newcomers Mirbat. Yohei Iwasaki hit a brace (19th, 22nd). Al Shabab (18) now are three points behind leaders Al Suwaiq (21) after eight matches.


Al Nasr (15 points) kept the top three spots unchanged from last round when Joseph’s 34th minute goal earned them full three points against Al Salam at Al Saada Sports Complex.


Dhofar thrash Al Nahda


Defending champions Dhofar moved up to fourth with a 4-2 win against Al Nahda at Al Buraimi Complex.

For Dhofar, Abdullah Fawaz (7th), Tamer Haj Mohammed, Lawson Bekei and Essam al Barhi (90th) were the scorers and Abdullah Saleh netted two goals for Al Nahda in the second half.


With the win, Dhofar, who were eighth after the seventh round, leaped to fourth spot with 12 points.


Ninth-placed Suhar moved up to fifth with 11 points after a one-goal win against Saham at Suhar Sports Complex. Salim al Muqbali hit the lone goal of the match.


Al Oruba are also on 11 points but trailed Suhar on goal difference after a 2-0 defeat against Al Mudhaibi. Omar al Habsi scored twice for newcomers Al Mudhaibi in the 7th and 79th minutes.


At ROP Stadium, Wattayah, Oman club sinked former champions Fanja 3-0. With their fifth defeat, Fanja plummeted to the bottom of the table on 7 points.


Al Munther al Alawi gave the lead for Oman club in the 60th minute and Saud al Farsi’s late flourish (90 and 93rd minutes) put the match well beyond the reach of hapless Fanja. Oman club are on 11th spot with eight points.
