98 per cent of population to get water by 2040

MUSCAT: The Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) seeks to cover 98 per cent of the population by 2040 through integrated systems which ensure constant improvement of services rendered to make them as per world class standards and customer-centric.


The system will also focus on subscriber services and ensuring high operational efficiency and development of human resources.


This was stated by Mohammed bin Abdullah al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the PAEW, during its Annual Media Forum 2016 at its head-quarters in Muscat on Thursday.


The meeting was aimed at reviewing the achievements made by the Authority, to present its future plans and projects and to answer queries from journalists.


Dr Man’e bin Qassim al Jabri, Senior Design Manager at the Directorate-General of Projects at PAEW, made a presentation on key projects under implementation or under way.


These projects include the 36-km-long Al Ghubrah-Muscat pipeline at a cost of RO 35 million of which 35 per cent has been completed as of now. Also included is the 11-km-long Wadi Adai-Al Amerat water pipeline at a cost of RO 15 million of which 88 per cent has been completed.


A presentation was made on the 58-km-long water pipeline from Al Amerat water reservoir to Deem reservoir at a cost of RO 39 million of which 95 per cent has been completed.  Mohammed al Yahay’ee, Acting Director-General of Subscriber Services at the Authority, said that the growth in the number of subscribers during the period from 2012 to 2015 stood at 30 per cent or 10 per cent per annum.


He added that water has been supplied to 281,000 subscribers since the beginning of 2007; a growth of 166 per cent and pointed out that there are 35 service centres in different parts of the Sultanate and these centres, which operate 24/7, receive new applications, complaints and inquires.


Abdullah bin Mohammed al Nu’aimi, Director-General of Operations at the PAEW, made a presentation on water quality at networks as per water quality strategy. He pointed out that the authority conducted assessment in 142 areas. He added that 20 teams have been formed to follow up water leakages. The teams were provided with state-of-the art equipment for detecting leaks.


Saud al Nadabi, Director of Planning at the Directorate-General of Assets Management and Planning, made a presentation on strategic water projects, water demand forecast and current water desalination projects.


He pointed out that the Authority regularly revises water needs, in coordination with Oman Power and Water Procurement Company to meet the growing demand for underground water taken from water wells. — ONA
