588,339 pupils to start new academic year

MUSCAT: Students will head to schools all over the Sultanate on Sunday for the new academic year 2017-18. The number of students is expected to reach 588,339 with an increase of 25,916 students over the previous year.


The number of schools has reached 1,129 this year, an increase of 29 over the previous year.


The number of teachers stands at 56,000 and administrative and technical staffs 10,641.


Speaking on the occasion, Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education, said: “This year will see the inauguration of 20 new schools and the appointment of 1,400 teachers in various specialisations, bringing the total number of teachers to 56,000 across all governorates.”


In continuation of its efforts aimed at improving teaching methodologies and boosting students’ educational output, the ministry will apply the “international series” for teaching mathematics and science with a view to keeping pace with the progressive global trends in math and science teaching.
