52 per cent road accidents during night

MUSCAT, Aug 27 - The number of road accidents saw a 40.4 per cent decrease by the end of July 2018, compared with the same period last year, according to statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information and the Royal Oman Police (ROP). A total of 215 accidents were reported this year in July, 222 in June and 217 in May. In July, 28.4 per cent of accidents occurred in Muscat Governorate, 17.2 per cent in Dhofar, 11.2 per cent in Al Dakhiliyah, 10.7 per cent in North Batinah and South Batinah and 21.8 per cent in the rest of the governorates.


Fifty-two per cent of accidents occurred at night compared with 48 per cent during the day. In July 2018, road accidents resulted in 42 deaths and 266 injuries as against 65 deaths and 277 injuries in June. Among the dead (July), 33 were citizens, of which 25 were males and eight girls. The deceased include nine expatriate males. A total of 200 citizens were injured (135 males, 65 females) and 66 expatriates (57 males, nine females).
