5 pc rise in Sultanate’s air traffic: PACA report

MUSCAT: About 548,000 aircraft crossed the Sultanate’s airspace in 2017, an average of 1,600 aircraft per day, registering an increase of 5 per cent from 2016 and 30 per cent from 2013. The annual report of the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA), published on Sunday by Oman newspaper, revealed that revenues from the concession contract granted to Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) increased by 25 per cent as a result of the increase in revenues generated by the increase in traffic through Muscat and Salalah airports.


The revenues of other airports, which include licensing fees, aviation safety and security fees, increased by 95 per cent following the increase in the number of permits granted to the relevant companies by PACA, in addition to the increase in the number of international passengers through the Sultanate’s airports.


Revenues from meteorological services increased by 36 per cent due to the growth in the number of flights benefiting from the meteorological services, in addition to the contribution of the revised and updated fees, which partially affected all PACA revenues.


The total expenses decreased by 12 per cent compared to 2016. Passenger traffic at Muscat International Airport grew by 17 per cent over the last year compared to 2016, with more than 14 million passengers, compared to 12.032 million passengers in 2016.


The air cargo at the airport rose 24 per cent in the same period, with about 198,335 tonnes, compared to 159,554 tonnes in 2016.


The number of arrival and departing aircraft increased by 9 per cent in 2017 compared with the previous year, with 120,559 aircraft in 2017, compared with 110,379 aircraft in 2016.


The PACA annual report revealed that Salalah International Airport achieved a growth rate of 99 per cent during the period 2013-2017.


The number of passengers reached 1,485,635 in 2017, compared with 746,994 passengers in 2013.


The air cargo at the airport decreased by 1 per cent, registering 1,327 tonnes in 2017, compared to 1,346 tonnes in 2016.


Sohar Airport witnessed a growth in aircraft traffic by 987 aircraft from July 2017 until the end of last year.


Passenger traffic at the airport increased from June 2017 to the end of the year by 114,504 passengers in December 2017.


Duqm Airport recorded a 41-per cent increase in passenger traffic, with 34,347 passengers in 2017, compared to 24,429 passengers in 2016.


The report added that the total number of operated aircraft reached 85 in 2017, in addition to 8 registered commercial aircraft. The number of crew member certificates issued last year reached 755. The number of complaints handled by air transport reached 149 in 2017. Applications for transportation of hazardous materials reached 872. The number of permits issued to enter the airport were about 1,058 in 2017. — ONA
