40.4 pc decline in road accidents

Muscat: The number of road accidents in the Sultanate dropped by 40.4 per cent till the end of July 2018 compared to the same month in 2017.


According to the latest statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), as many as 215 road accidents were recorded in July 2018, which was less compared to the months of May and June in 2018.


Among governorates, Muscat recorded the highest rate of road accidents at 28.4 percent in July this year, followed by Dhofar at 17.2 per cent, A'Dakhiliyah recorded 11.2 per cent, and the Governorates of North and South Al Batinah at 10.7 per cent each. The rate of accidents in the rest of the governorates reached 21.8 per cent, the data revealed.


NCSI data reveal that there was an overall reduction in the number of deaths, including Omanis and expatriates, by 31.1 per cent in July 2018 compared to the same month in 2017. As many as 42 people, comprising 33 Omanis and 9 expatriates, fell deaths to road  accidents in July 2018. This is comparatively less considering the figures in May and June, which were 45 and 65, respectively.


Meanwhile, about 266 people, comprising 200 Omanis and 66 expatriates, were injured in July this year, which is less compared to the same month in 2017. Of the total number of accidents, 52 per cent took place in the night and 48 per cent was recorded during the day. --ONA
