By Lakshmi Kothaneth — MUSCAT: Dec 4: Four Omani travellers have found a unique way to promote tourism and Oman’s heritage: on camels. The four — Ahmed al Mahrouqi, Mohammed al Zedjali, Amur al Wahaibi and Ahmed al Junaibi — will be accompanied by 20 camels during their tourism promotion in the desert. The event, organised by Camel Magazine, will be held from December 5 to 8. Their journey will begin on Monday at Al Raha camp in Bidhiya, from where it will proceed to the 1000 Nights Desert Camp at al Sharqiyah Sands. The objective is to meet visitors and convey the role of Omanis in promoting science and culture while giving an insight to the country’s rich culture and tourism.

Al Mahrouqi said, “This journey is to celebrate Oman’s 46th National Day, promote tourism and talk about our heritage, especially the camels.” Al Zedjali  and Al Wahaibi were team members and explorers who participated in the ‘Crossing the Empty Quarter’ with Mark Evans. They completed the first crossing of Empty Quarter in 85 years, after 49 days and 1,300 km on foot and by camel in January this year. “We have books for distributing among tourists. I am from the desert and I am proud to share the heritage and my connection with camels and deserts. In our lifestyle today, it is so easy to ignore our age old tradition of living in the desert with the camels. But we want to keep our heritage alive. That is why the Camel Magazine wanted to organise this event,” said Ahmed al Jenaibi from the Camel Magazine.
