Muscat, Sept 11 - Three new airlines will commence their operations in the Sultanate, the agreements for which have been signed by Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC). One of these airlines will begin its services from Sohar Airport, said Shaikh Ayman bin Ahmed al Hosani, CEO, OAMC. He said the number of passengers using Muscat International Airport will reach 16 million in the current year, while the number of passengers using Salalah Airport will touch 1.6 million. Muscat Airport was ranked 74th globally in 2017, but dropped 50 points to 24 after inauguration of the new passenger terminal building in March this year, he said.

The airport handled a record 52,000 passengers on August 16, including arrivals and departures. “It is a record for any airport in Oman,” he said. There has been a 11.9 per cent increase in the number of passengers (8 million) handled in the first seven months of 2018 at Muscat Airport compared with 7.2 million a year ago. Thirteen million passengers travelled through Muscat in 2017. At the same time, the number of transit passengers declined 44.3 per cent to 10,956 in the first seven months of 2018 from 19,679 in 2017. Salalah Airport saw a 19.5 per cent decline in the total number of passengers travelling through it. A total of 265,552 passengers used the airport in the first seven months of 2018 as against 329,926 in 2017.
