MUSCAT: The 17th Sultan Qaboos University Day, that commemorates the visit of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to the University on May 2, 2000, will be observed on Tuesday with a number of activities. The opening of the University Day celebrations will be held under the auspices of Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah al Hinai, State Adviser. The highlight of the day is the announcement of the research projects to be supported by His Majesty’s Strategic Research Fund. The best researchers, distinguished academicians, distinguished physicians and outstanding students will be honoured on the occasion. A research exhibition by various colleges and research centres will also be organised.

In his statement on the occasion of the 17th SQU Day, Dr Ali bin Saud al Bimani, the Vice-Chancellor of SQU, said: “For the Sultan Qaboos University, May 2 emphasises the continuous attention and care of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to this institution, since its establishment.

“The day indicates the importance of learning and research as emphasised by His Majesty, who announced on this day his great support for the University’s efforts in the field of research, which must contribute to the Renaissance of Oman and its progress, and finding solutions to the challenges faced the Omani society through science and empirical methodology.

“We work at SQU to produce innovative ideas, keeping in mind that creativity is not exclusive to anyone but it lies in all open-minded people who believe in the importance of ethics, teamwork and cooperation. This is what SQU believes in; and it derives its name from His Majesty the Sultan. The name will enlighten the University’s path towards further progress and development”.
