MUSCAT: The Information Technology Authority celebrated the graduation of the 13th batch of the training programme of Sas Centre for Virtual Reality. The programme is held for the period of three months for 40 Omanis in each batch and the 13 batch was in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and sponsored by BP Oman. The graduation ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr Hamoud bin Khalfan al Harthi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education and Curriculum and attended by Dr Salim bin Sultan al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA and Yousuf bin Mohammed al Ojaili, President of BP Oman.

Over the last three years, the ITA’s Sas.VR has trained more than 500 trainees in 13 batches, out of which 120 trainees were sponsored by BP Oman as part of its Social Investment Programme, to implement a number of educational projects using virtual reality technologies for the Ministry of Education. The eight interactive, immersive e-learning projects developed based on the Ministry of Education’s K1-12 curriculum were showcased at the ceremony.

Divided into eight groups, the students worked to digitally enhance the mode of delivery for teaching by developing the following applications: Structure of the Earth, Types of Rocks, Road Safety, Arabic Language: Letter Wheel, English Language: How to tell time, Life Skills: Dental Health, Arabic Alphabet and Geography: Earthquake. These projects are expected to benefit students across different schools in the Sultanate. The graduates can now embark on careers in virtual reality and play a pivotal role in enhancing the evolving digital media industry of Oman. Commenting on the importance of the programme, Shamsa bint Ahmed al Rawahi, BP Oman’s Social Investment Programme Officer said, “Virtual Reality is becoming an important global trend however, and has not been tapped heavily. We are happy that we’re starting to make a difference through training Omanis in the VR field and with the support of MOE. BP is committed to giving Omanis skills that will increase their employability in the future.”

Elias Tang, Director of the Sas Centre for Virtual Reality and Managing Director at ASM Technologies said, “We are delighted with the quality of the projects from this batch. To a very large extend, the MoE Subject Matter Experts are instrumental by being supportive throughout. Of course not forgetting BP Oman, who continue to believe in Sas.VR, not only in sponsoring the training but also giving a lot of intangible support in the entire journey. This is an example of a win-win-win situation, BP Oman win, MoE win and the trainees, which is also Sas.VR.”
