Muscat, july 30 - A total of 124 workers were arrested by Ministry of Manpower for illegally carrying out activities at 47 places in Muscat, including Mabela, Ghala Industrial Area, Al Khuwair, Wadi Kabir, Muttrah Souq and Ruwi.

They were arrested during the ministry’s inspection campaigns.

Such campaigns are conducted as part of the ministry’s efforts to regulate the labour market and restrict expat workers from operating illegally in the country, posing a threat to both security and economy, said sources.

Employers have been urged to respect provisions of the Omani Labour Law, ministerial decisions and follow the terms of licenses granted to them. It urged the companies to settle all financial dues of the expatriate workers that they are entitled to.

Penalties for employing workers illegally include fines, deportation of workers, banning them from entering Oman again and stopping the company from hiring workers for about a year.
