MUSCAT: Eleven research projects won the National Research Awards (NRA 2017) at the fourth edition of The Research Council’s (TRC) ‘Annual Research Forum’ held yesterday at Sheraton Oman Hotel.

While six projects won under the first category of the award, PhD Holders, five projects won within the award’s second category, Junior Researchers.

Out of the total of 98 research projects received by the Research Council in 2017 competing for both the categories of the award, TRC also awarded the top research projects under the Faculty Mentored Research Award Program of TRC (FURAP).

Addressing the gathering in the welcoming address, Dr Saif al Haddabi, Assistant Secretary General for Research and Scientific Programs at TRC, said, “The Research Council has already made remarkable progress towards the creation of enabling environment, knowledge transfer and capacity building through the implementation of the National Research Strategy.”

“In its efforts for the creation of the enabling environment, The Research Council activated a number of research programs and competitions, such as the National Research Award and the Individual Innovations Competition, which eventually contributed to the increase of the registered patents, the transfer of a number of research projects into start-ups, in addition to the increase of the refereed scientific publications,” he added.

This year’s forum saw the participation from around 500 scientists, researchers and innovators.

As part of the activities of the 4th Annual Research Forum, TRC also organised an exhibition that displayed 41 posters with abstracts of a number of research projects funded by TRC. A total of 15 research devices have also been displayed at the forum. In the parallel sessions, 31 presentations were delivered under the various research sectors adopted by TRC.

Within the activities of the forum Dr Rawya bint Saud al Busaidiya, Minister of Higher Education and Deputy Chairman of TRC, officially launched EJAAD, electronic platform for collaboration between industry sector in the energy field and the academic and research institutions in Oman.

EJAAD has been established as one of the fruits of the collaboration between TRC, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and the Ministry of Oil and Gas. It comes under the slogan of ‘Collaborate and Create Value’ and is expected to allow the industrial sector to present the challenges it faces where researchers at universities can access them electronically and propose appropriate solutions. EJAAD e-platform bridges the gap between industry and academia through the Institute of Advanced Technology Integration (IATI) of TRC.

The platform will also allow its subscribers to access data of researchers in Oman and the latest laboratories and devices in the academic and industrial institutions. In later future stages, the platform will allow the transfer of researchers from the academic sector to the industrial sector for the sake of expertise exchange through benefiting from the human cadres existing with both sides.
